YOU SAY YOU CAN SING?
YOU SAY YOU CAN PLAY?

PROVE IT.

That's right, cowboys and cowgirls. Because you asked for it -- and because we ran out of excuses -- Butlers Coffee is now hosting OPEN MIC NIGHTS!
You'll have ten minutes to strut your stuff. You can sing, dance, juggle, recite incredibly bad poetry, whatever. But you've got ten minutes, and ten minutes only.
Currently we have several types of Open Mic Nights.
Desert Song Productions, in conjunction with Butler's, will be hosting an Open Mic the third Friday of every month.
The Antelope Valley Guitar Society hosts a monthly open meeting at Butler's, which often serves as a de facto Open Mic night -- at least for those who play guitar.
As well, Butler's Coffee themselves will occasionally present their own Open Mic nights, as demand and opportunity warrants, usually mid-week, and an occasional Kamikaze Open Mic Night on Saturday Showcases.
But whoever's "running" the show, the usual Butler's performance rules apply for Open Mic Nights. In addition, however, please bear in mnd:
- If you're interested, sign-up begins at 6:00 PM the night of the show. At Butler's. And you MUST sign-up in person and tell us what sort of act you are.
- The first act goes on at seven. Space is limited, so when all the slots are filled, that's it. If you sign up and then you're not there when it's your turn, somebody else will get your spot.
- We reserve the right to tweak the playing order to make for a more interesting show.
- You've only got ten minutes. Don't spend eight of them tuning your zither. Be ready to plug-in and play.
- Feel free to bring your friends, family, spiritual advisers and parole officers to cheer you on. But there is a one-drink min and NO outside food or drink will be permitted. We want customers, NOT freeloaders. You WILL be judged by the crowd you bring, so tell the deadbeats and mooches to stay home. Call us capitalists if you will, but we prefer PAYING customers.
- Bring some contact info, so we can contact you.
- Please be ready to plug in and play. We do have a sound system and two mics.
- We offer LIVE music. So please -- NO pre-recorded backing tracks for musicians. If you can't cut it live, Butler's is not the venue for you.
- Most events begin at 7:00. Support your fellow musicians by being there when they play. If you're not there, you're nowhere.
- Stick around. If someone doesn't show up, we may ask you to perform again.
- Stick around, just on general principles. Give your fellow performers the respect and attention you'd want them to give to you.
- This ain't Disneyland, but it is a family business. So please: no smoke bombs, no profanity, no drugs, no booze, no human sacrifice. We reserve the right to abort any performance deemed unsuitable for our audience.
- As loathsome as I find censorship, this is the Antelope Valley, where intolerance is not exactly unheard of. So please be careful what you're singing about. Lyrics relating to explicit sex or extreme violence will not be tolerated, and ignorant and/or intolerant opinions about race, politics, religion, sexual preference, Canadians, etc. are not welcome. If you think there might be an issue, check it out with me. Sorry, Rush.
- Please leave the livestock at home.
- There is no financial compensation, and no guarantees, but if we like the cut of your gib, we may invite you back to play again, possibly at one of our Java Jams or Saturday Showcases.
Any questions or comments? Feel free to contact Kevin via e-mail. He doesn't bite.
